A Rare Durian Variant with a Premium Taste

Bold and genuinely rare, Durian Petai carries a distinctive bitter note with an aroma that is similar to Fresh Petai – the famous stink bean so embedded with Orang Asli cuisine and culture. With only a few plants identified across the Peninsular Malaysia – this variant is not available during ever harvest season. But when the forest provides, we look to harvest some beautiful durians that might have a larger seed, but carries a premium taste to its pulp. Planted across indigenous forests decades ago, these durians are grown with no chemicals, no fertilisers, and no human intervention.

Flesh: Pale Yellow with a greenish hue

Complex, bold, and unmistakably distinct. Durian Petai is given its name due to its smell. When opened up, the durian emits a faint aroma of fresh petai, giving way to a layered profile with an fermented sensation and a satisfying bitter aftertaste reminiscent of more commercial XO variants. A rare durian, even amongst the indigenous community.

Petai – a bitter bean – is deeply embedded in the cuisine and culture of the Orang Asli. So much so, that the community has named this durian after it, which speaks to how central both plants are to their forest identity. The Durian Petai is rare, and limited in quantity during the harvest seasons. When it runs out, it’s gone until the forest decides otherwise.
